Transparency is the oxygen of trust.

For 33 years, we have worked to break the cycle of crime and poverty. Every leu we receive has a story, and we document it. Here you can find our reports, external audits and the figures every donor has the right to see.

Why we report

Every leu has a story. We tell it.

We grew in a country where “non-governmental organisation” was often associated with a lack of openness. We chose a different path: 33 years of verified figures, external audits and public reports. Anyone who entrusts their money, time or hope to us has the right to see exactly where it goes.

The reports on this page are more than a public image exercise. They are a promise we renew every quarter and every year to our donors, beneficiaries and the 24 communities where we work.

— The Prison Fellowship Romania Foundation team

  • 85% directly to beneficiaries

For every leu donated, 85 bani go directly to the people the donation is intended to support.

  • Annual external audit

Our accounts are checked every year by an independent external auditor. The findings are attached to each public report.

  • PFI and ECOSOC status

PFR is part of the Prison Fellowship International network. PFI holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), granted in 1983.

  • Official ANP partner

We work with the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP) in 34 partner prisons, through an institutional partnership reviewed month by month.

Sources of support

Where every leu comes from.

Diverse sources of funding help us stay independent. Here is a clear picture of where the funds for our work come from.

Government and EU programmes61%
Grants, public partnerships and EU projects — reviewed regularly
International donors29%
The Prison Fellowship International network and affiliated partners in more than 120 countries
Local donors and partners10%
Individual donations, sponsorships, 3.5% income tax allocations and corporate partners

Independence through diverse funding

No single donor accounts for an unsustainable share of our funding. This allows us to reject any influence that conflicts with our mission and to support anyone who needs our help.

85% of every donation goes directly to beneficiaries. The remaining 15% supports operations, audits, public transparency and the salaries of the 26+ employees who make our work possible in 24 communities.

How to read a report

Frequently asked questions.

Short answers to the most common questions about our reports and audits.

Why do you now report quarterly, rather than only annually?

A year is a long time to wait to find out where the money goes. From 2026, we publish a short report every three months with key figures, active programmes and stories of impact from that quarter. The annual report continues, complemented by four updates throughout the year.

What is the difference between the Romanian and English versions of a report?

There is no difference in substance. Both versions contain the same figures, audit data and stories of impact. The English version is intended for international donors and partners, particularly the Prison Fellowship International network and partners within UN ECOSOC.

Who checks the figures in the report?

Each annual report includes the findings of a financial audit conducted by an independent external firm. Programmes funded by government or European grants also undergo checks by the funding authorities. The findings are published as an appendix to the report. Quarterly reports use operational figures confirmed by the finance department and subsequently reconciled during the annual audit.

What does “85% directly to beneficiaries” mean?

For every 100 lei donated, 85 lei are used for services, material aid, hot meals, prison visits or support for children. The remaining 15% covers audits, legal compliance, public communications and the minimum salaries of the people who make the entire operation possible.

Can I request additional information that is not in the report?

Yes. We are an open organisation. Please contact us and we will provide the additional information you request, while respecting the privacy of our beneficiaries.

Why are some reports longer than others?

Anniversary reports, published every five years, are longer because they include retrospective reviews, life stories and cumulative results. Standard annual reports focus on the results of the year. Quarterly reports are shorter and focus on what happened during those three months.

The next step

You have seen the figures.
Would you like to be part of the next report?

Every report begins with an act of support: a donation, a tax allocation or a partnership. Choose how you would like to be part of next quarter’s story.
