A warm meal that changed everything

Vasile was 71 when he first walked through the door of Bucătăria Speranței (Kitchen of Hope). He was wearing a thin coat, even though it was January outside. He hadn't eaten in two days.

He hadn't come because he wanted to. He had come because he had no other choice.

A pensioner with 1,100 lei a month, Vasile paid his rent, medicine, and bills. At the end of the month, there was nothing left for food. He got by on bread and tea, sometimes nothing at all.

A neighbor told him about Bucătăria Speranței. "It's a soup kitchen where you can eat for free. Good, warm food, three times a day."

Vasile hesitated for a week. Then he came.

What Vasile found at Bucătăria Speranței

It wasn't what he expected. It wasn't a bleak place with food pushed onto a tray. It was a bright, clean hall with neatly arranged tables. And most importantly, everyone was treated the same.

At Bucătăria Speranței PFR, customers who pay 30 lei for the daily menu and beneficiaries who receive a free meal eat the exact same food, at the same table, in the same room. There is no distinction. There is no stigma.

"I thought it would be like the factory canteen, 30 years ago," Vasile recounts. "But here it's different. You feel human, not a beggar."

More than a plate

Bucătăria Speranței was founded in 2001 by Prison Fellowship Romania. Since then, it has grown from a few dozen portions a day to over 450 warm meals daily.

But numbers don't tell the whole story. The soup kitchen doesn't just offer food, it offers a community space.

Vasile started coming daily. For breakfast (8:00-9:00 AM), for lunch (12:00-1:00 PM), sometimes even for dinner (6:00-7:00 PM). He became part of the rhythm of the place.

He met Maria, a single mother with two children. Gheorghe, a former construction worker who lost his job after an accident. Ioana, a Ukrainian refugee who didn't speak Romanian yet, but smiled when she received her plate.

At Bucătăria Speranței, no one asks why you came. Everyone is welcome.

How a successful model works

Bucătăria Speranței operates 365 days a year, without exception. Christmas, Easter, summer - the door is always open.

How it works:

The "Buy One, Give One" model: The customer who buys the daily menu for 30 lei automatically funds a meal for a beneficiary. A single transaction, a double impact.

3 meals a day, 7 days a week. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at fixed times, constantly, all year round.

Cooking workshops. Beneficiaries can participate in culinary workshops, learn to cook for themselves, moving from consumers to creators. A concrete step towards autonomy.

Collaboration with the Food Bank. Part of the ingredients come from the food waste reduction program. Food that would otherwise have been discarded reaches the tables of those in need.

What the numbers say

The impact of Bucătăria Speranței in numbers:

·        450+ warm meals daily — served in 3 locations

·        167,000+ meals served annually — equivalent to 457 meals every day of the year

·        2,000+ beneficiaries who received food support

·        647 people regularly receive services (197 in Cluj, 150 in Turda, 300 in Gherla)

·        365 days a year — without a single day off

Beneficiaries include homeless people, elderly singles with low pensions, single-parent families, long-term unemployed, refugees, families of prisoners, and members of Roma communities.

Why a warm meal matters

A warm meal seems like a simple thing. But for someone who hasn't eaten in two days, it's everything.

It's the energy to go to a job interview. It's the calm of not having to think about hunger anymore. It's the dignity of knowing that someone thought of you.

At PFR, we say: "A warm meal is sometimes the first step towards dignity."

For Vasile, it was exactly that. After a few months at Bucătăria Speranței, he learned about other PFR programs. He received help renewing his medical documents. He was connected with a family doctor. He started participating in community activities.

"I didn't just come for the food," Vasile says now. "I came because here someone sees me."

How you can help

Bucătăria Speranței operates thanks to those who choose to be part of the solution.

·        30 lei = 1 complete warm meal for a person in need

·        210 lei = a week of meals for a beneficiary

·        900 lei = a month of daily meals

You can also help through the "Buy One, Give One" model: come to Bucătăria Speranței, buy a menu for 30 lei, and automatically fund a meal for someone who can't afford it.

Or redirect 3.5% of your income tax. It costs you nothing extra, and the money goes directly to PFR programs.

Every meal served is a gesture of hope. Every gesture counts.
